Gasshuku 2010

Midland, TX

Great gasshuku this year--lots of interesting guest styles and speakers, and a great familial atmosphere that keeps me going back there. Sorry if I didn't get a photo you wanted up, everyone was just kind of shooting randomly so I picked the ones with the most sharpness.

Tensho

2010

definitely not the Chojin Miyagi version, though it sure does reek of white crane. If anyone practices this kata and learned it by another name, please let me know!

Suparinpei

2010

A very old kata with a Chinese name. I haven't been practicing it very long, only a year or so. I haven't seen a lot of variations of this kata, looks almost identical between schools (probably because relatively few people practice/have practiced it). Lots and lots of really devastating techniques in the bunkai.

Pinan

2010

This kata is usually taught broken down into five parts. Called "Heian" in Shotokan and other Japanese styles. Nobody really knows how the original kata looked, but if you stick the pieces back together you get a few new bunkai.

Bassai

2008

My attempt at the Bassai (sometimes "Passai") karate kata originating from Okinawa. Often performed broken into 2 parts (as per the Japanese Shotokan variation). Roughly translates to "storming a castle."

Empi

2008

My performance of the Empi karate kata originating from Okinawa. Sometimes called "Wansu."
